Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 12:30:17 AM)

I've been busy, between staking out that pack of Laukos, taking over as the fieldleader here and, of course, dating Jax. Things are still moving slowly, but nicely, I think. I've got some hope for the future.

Today, I'm on-base, in the gym. I almost haven't had time for that lately, but I really do need it. If the only workout I get is when I'm using my sigil, then I'm looking at a lot of muscle atrophy.

Weights today, then. Specifically, a leg press machine, on my ninth rep now.

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 12:44:20 AM)

Ray made his way into the gym, and over to Rook who was working out. It seemed like he was always working out, weirdly, which is why Ray had figured he would be able to find him here. He made his way over to a free-weight stand which was reasonably close enough to Rook to make it look like he actually had an excuse to be there, and began doing some stretches.

"So," he said to Rook with an emphasized aura of casualness. "How about that party?"

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 12:47:52 AM)

"Didn't quite go how I expected, but I never threw a party before," I comment, shrugging slightly. After my tenth rep, I stop to sit up, mopping some sweat off before I take a swig from my water bottle.

"Seems like you had a good time, though. You and Frankie's brother…?" It looked like something might've been brewing there, at least, though I didn't see them leave together.

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 12:58:02 AM)

Ray grinned, his quest for information momentarily forgotten.

"Yeah. We ah.. Yeah." He finished his stretches and picked up a pair of weights.

"But I was talking to t-.. Frankie, and she mentioned how you and her ran into the wolf-Laukos things. I didn't know about that." he kept his voice non-committal, idly curious not actively looking for information.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 1:08:49 AM)

"She mentioned that to you?" I ask, glancing at Ray with some surprise. Hadn't actually expected her to discuss it casually with anyone, considering how difficult it was to get much information out of her at first.

But, since he already knows, I nod slightly. "That's how we'd met. Before I got snatched up by Shockfront I was sort of working freelance, you might say. I heard about some 'animal maulings' down in Louisiana that caught my attention. I went down there, found a pack of them. She was already aware of them and helped me take them all out. I couldn't have done it without her."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 1:13:47 AM)

"Really?" He paused between sets.

"So she knows a lot about them, then? Have we considered, you know, bringing her in, finding out if she has anything more she can tell us about them?" It wasn't as casual as would have like, but he was here on a mission.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 1:18:36 AM)

Ray's interest doesn't surprise me, if Frankie actually let it slip that she knew about them. Maybe she'd said something while drunk, but…no. She wasn't drinking enough to get that wasted at the party. Some other time, then? Maybe, but it doesn't seem likely. I keep puzzling over that, why she'd say something about it to Ray.

"Anything we know that isn't from direct experience via the Ark is because of her. She told me what she could, but I gathered there were things she couldn't tell me, too, and she couldn't say how she knew all of this. She's a good guy, though. I'd bet my life on it. Have, in fact."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 1:22:12 AM)

It was time to cut to the chase, more or less.

"Rook, if there's things she knows and she's not telling us… it might be the difference between us making it out of somewhere and… not."

Ray didn't want to pull the 'I saw at least one of my friends eviscerated in front of me before the building exploded', but he would if he had no other choice.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 1:32:15 AM)

Hearing that makes me frown darkly. He has a point, but it implies that Frankie would hold back information that we need, which I don't think she would. "I'm fairly certain she's told us everything that might save lives, but I can ask her to give a more formal briefing on them. I'm not going to push, though. An informant who doesn't tell you everything but sticks around is better than one you chase away."

Standing up, I take another swig off of my water bottle before I wipe the machine down, since it's bad form to leave it with sweat drippings.

"Or you could just drill her brother for information."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 1:38:26 AM)

Ray nodded mutely. It wasn't exactly what he had wanted, but it was something.

"Thanks Rook," he said quietly, "I just don't want to see anyone else get hurt if we could avoid it. Things went bad because we didn't know enough going in. I just… I want to make sure it doesn't happen again."

He couldn't keep a little bit of color from reaching his face, so he quickly put down his weights and grabbed a much heavier set.

"I don't know if he knows anything, and I wouldn't want to bring up something like that if he doesn't. Would hurt our cover." which it probably would have, if it weren't already damage done.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 1:43:54 AM)

"I know. I don't like not knowing everything myself, but I have to respect her secrets if I expect her to respect mine," I point out. It's hard, but necessary. She's got some weird double life going on, obviously, and so do I, obviously. We can't share all of the details together.

When he says he doesn't know if Tamir knows anything, though, I quirk a brow.

"Come off it, Ray. He told you. Frankie wouldn't have let it slip to somebody she didn't know. A guy who wants to get laid might talk about it, though."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 1:51:36 AM)

"I know that it's give and take, but I just… don't think that our secrets are going to potentially get her killed.", he responded.

Damn. Busted

Ray gave a little resigned sigh. "Am I really that obvious? My guess is that anything he knows, she knows. And I wasn't going to question him over it because then that's two civvies we've involved. Didn't see a need. Frankie… she's already tangled in this."

Ray set the weights back on the rack and moved to the leg press Rook had recently vacated. He frowned and set the pin back a good bit.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 2:14:00 AM)

"Then I'll ask her what I can, but you might have better luck with him if you guys have hit it off at all," I point out with a shrug. And it seems as though they did. Involving further civilians in this is bad, but if they're vaguely aware of some things and the only involvement is with those things, it's not quite as bad.

I'm all for bending rules for results, obviously.

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 2:18:06 AM)

"I'll see what I can do." Ray annoyed that what he had considered his clever plan had backfired. He revised his opinion on how clever it really had been, and resolved to change the subject.

"So what was with Jax and Haper?" he asked. "You were sitting right there, you must have heard it."

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 2:23:27 AM)

"Uh…" Crap. I give Ray a deer-in-headlights look after that question. He doesn't know? Aria and Colin figured it out just fine. We even kissed before Jax left, but Ray had been dancing with Tamir. I guess he didn't really notice.

"Harper was kind of under the impression that she and Jax had a thing, or the start of a thing? And they didn't," I explain a bit awkwardly. I can feel myself starting to blush a bit, too.

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 2:29:25 AM)

"Harper said that she… " Ray noticed Rook's colour change slightly. That added to the little stumble and pause before Rook started talking, and things started sliding into place.

"Nooooooooooo…." Ray felt a little surprised, disbelieving, scandalized, playful smile cross his lips.

"No waaay! Really? No wonder she was upset!"

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 2:39:55 AM)

Well. That didn't take long for him to figure out, did it? Ray's obviously very observant about these sorts of things. It isn't helping my schoolgirl blush here at all, though.

"It wasn't some…nefarious plan on my part or anything," I point out, feeling like I have to justify myself. "I thought he was gay the day I met him, but I wasn't…out to out him. And I didn't even know that there were feelings there from Harper."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 2:50:30 AM)

"Really? I've never gotten the gay vibe off him. Confused, yes. Gay no. But hey, mazel tov. As for Harper… well I talked to her. Now that I know what the hell she was talking about, I'd say that she'll get over it fine. It was just it seems that her un-thing with Jax was the first quasi-relationship she'd had in a long time…" he shrugged.

"She's tough, and she'll pull through. I think I managed to talk her out of leaving the team."

Ray had grown fond of Jax over the time they'd spent together at the beginning of Shockfront's formation. Jax hadn't been his first friend, but as he had gotten to know him Ray had hoped that maybe one day they might have something more. It was a hope he'd written off as a pipe dream, though, given he was pretty sure that Jax wasn't ever going to be interested in him that way. At this point, though, the excitement over his budding relationship with Tamir was more than enough to make something that would probably have been bittersweet almost completely positive.

"But… you treat him right, ok? Or else I'll have to uh… come beat you up." he was aware how ridiculous it was to be threatening someone who'd taken him on before and was not at all worse the wear for it.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 3:00:32 AM)

"Maybe I just got the vibe off of him because moments after we met he was thinking about me going to his apartment uninvited," I point out, shrugging. It was not a particularly common concern, unless he was attracted and trying to resist it. In which case it was just funny.

My blush is easing a bit now, at least. Is there anyone else in the world who doesn't know now?

"Of course I treat him right. He's a good guy and deserves it." And considering how the last altercation between Ray and me went, I'm not too worried about him beating me up.

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 3:06:23 AM)

"Maybe." Ray agreed. Jax hadn't told him that story, so Ray would make sure to ask him next time he saw him.

"And I know you will - you hauled my ass out of Argentina without even knowing me, which is a pretty damn good character reference. It's just something you have to say to your friends's… boyfriend.". It felt weird for him to say that in connection with Jax.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 3:10:25 AM)

"I don't know if I'd say he's my boyfriend. We're talking things slow," I point out, just to be on the safe side. Obviously, I'm not seeing anyone other than Jax and he's the only person I'm interested in, but I'm a little worried about scaring him off with titles. I'm still trying to avoid using the G word around him.

A subject change might be helpful around now.

"I'll talk to Frankie about what she knows."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 3:22:38 AM)

Ray nodded. "I… hope things work out for you two". He was mildly surprised by how genuine the wish was, but then again seeing other people happy had always made him feel like the world was a worthwhile place.

Then Rook changed the subject and Ray laughed.

"So, here we go around full circle. You know about my semi-hidden-semi-relationship and I know about yours. Not exactly what I had in mind, but I guess it works."

Ray thought about the entirety of the conversation for a moment. "I'm sorry I wasn't more direct the Frankie thing. That was kinda low. It is important to me, doing everything we can to not go in blind. It was also just…" he gave a slightly depressive look.

"I woke up and found I'd lost eight months. A bunch of new people, a couple of dead friends. I'm older, Anna's younger… and my apartment got sold because there was nobody there waiting for me."

"Made me think about how things are going to be five, ten years from now. Or if something like that were to happen again. I'm … I don't date people. I'm that guy. And now I find I suddenly want to have that life… I just didn't want to scare him away by throwing questioning and weird paramilitary shit at him. Didn't want to wreck my chances before I even started."

Yeah, Rook was going to be a great field leader. He was easy to talk to, you almost didn't notice you were spilling your emotional guts. Maybe he had two sigils.

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 3:35:32 AM)

When Ray laughs, I smirk a bit, giving him a nod. "I guess we're even, then."

Furrowing my brow, I frown a bit as I listen to him continue, explaining his concerns and everything. I grow quiet, just thinking that over and if there's anything I could possibly offer to ease his mind.

"It's pretty difficult to have a relationship with somebody you have to keep secrets from," I point out. "Obviously, there are things you can't tell him about, but doesn't it seem like…avoiding secrets you both know is just going to create tension? If things are going to be difficult enough, you shouldn't make them harder than they have to be."

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 3:42:12 AM)

"I guess I just thought that if I started talking about that, it would lead to talking about what we do. I guess I figured that if we both just agreed to not talk about this" he gestured vaguely at the building they were in, "then it wouldn't lead to problems with knowing some things but not others, and having to keep track of what I can and can't say. Having a double life sucks. And I'm worried that one day I might say something I shouldn't and then he could know things, which might put him in danger." Ray nodded, turning the thought over in his mind.

"I signed up for this. He didn't. But what you said makes sense too…" the frustration was evident in his voice.

"How do people do this? There's none of this crazy worrying about it with just sex."

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 3:47:39 AM)

"They talk. Lots of talking. Sometimes more than you really want to." I chuckle a bit, shaking my head. "I don't know. I'm not the world's greatest expert at dating."

I pause a moment, thinking. "But if Frankie has secrets and knows about Laukos, and Tamir knows about Laukos, it's safe to say he has secrets, too. Maybe you should just work out an agreement about what you can discuss and what you can't."

Though that does bring up some interesting problems. What happens if you move in with someone while in Shockfront? Or get married? God. The double life thing would be a real nightmare then.

Ray McKenzie (Zxaos) (7/14/2009 3:54:53 AM)

"Right. And talking is the problem. And really, how do you talk about secrets and what you can and can't talk about without really… talking about them and giving things away. I bet that discussion is going to be interesting to say the least."

Ray finally noticed that he'd been sitting at the leg press machine doing nothing for quite a while now. He stood, and began wiping down the machine.

"I guess I'll figure it out. Or I won't, and it will blow up in my face." he finished and looked over at Rook.

"But… thanks for listening to me ramble. And you'll talk to Frankie, I'll talk to Tamir." the arrangement didn't actually seem to bad to him anymore, "and we'll find out what we can."

Marquis Rook Hale (Caerie) (7/14/2009 4:01:43 AM)

"That we will," I agree with a nod. Whatever happens between him and Tamir, whatever arrangement they work out, I can't help him with, but hopefully they'll manage. He seems pretty happy talking about Frankie's brother, and I'd like to see him like that more often.
