Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 9:20:27 PM) I really have no idea how to do this romantic crap. It's not something I've ever engaged in before and I certainly wasn't sitting around fantasizing about it as a teenager. If I'd been smart, I would have asked Frankie for advice on it, though maybe her advice wouldn't have really worked. What a girl wants as acknowledgment of a step like this and what Jax would want may not be the same.Fuck. I suck at relationships.I'd picked up a bottle of wine on my way over to Jax's apartment, since I hadn't really had much to drink when I was out with Frankie and I think relaxing together with a couple of glasses sounds nice. So does the sound of my key unlocking his door.

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 9:28:00 PM) There really wasn't much on television during the summer. Jax flipped the station again with the converter in his left hand, his right holding a crimson paper towel against his bruised nose.Say what you will about Harper (like, crazy naive bitch, for instance), the girl knew how to throw a punch. It wasn't broken, and the bleeding had slowed, but his nose was still bleeding.A slight thrill of adrenaline and dismay coursed through him at the sound of a key in his lock. Wrex picked his head up off of the couch, looking over his shoulder toward the door, but Jax wasn't worried. He knew it was Rook, as much as he'd hoped his boyfriend (it still felt funny, thinking that) would maybe come by tomorrow. He was still wearing the black t-shirt he had been earlier, but had exchanged his jeans for a pair of track shorts. "Hey, babe," he called out nasally when the door finally opened, surprising himself when "babe" slipped out so naturally. He didn't turn around. "Found the key, huh?"

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 9:37:52 PM)Babe. That surprises me a little, in a good way, though. It sends an unexpected little thrill through me.Obviously, I'm getting a little smitten here. Even if I suck at romance like a two dollar whore."I did. Thank you," I tell him, grinning a little in spite of myself at that question as I shut and lock the door behind me. When I turn to look at him, though, I pause. "Shit. What happened to you?"There's blood and his nose looks just a bit swollen and bruised. I come over to the couch, setting the bottle of wine down on the coffee table along with my keys before I sit down to get a closer look at him.

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 9:46:00 PM) He frowned a little bit, heaving a sigh. "You want the terribly embarrassing and incredibly emasculating truth, or the action-packed and sexy lie? The lie is all figured out and ready to go, and completely bulletproof." Wrex's tail thumped heavily against the back of the couch as Rook approached.Jax flipped the TV off, raising an eyebrow at the wine. "Wine, Hale?" He sat up, setting his feet on the floor. "Are we celebrating? Should I get you flowers and keys more often?" Under the towel, he was grinning.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 9:57:19 PM) "It wasn't Ray again, was it?" I check, giving Jax a curious look. As near as I can tell, Ray's relaxed a bit and there isn't much tension between the two of them, particularly not since he's got a boyfriend now to distract him from everything he's been through, but he's the last one I'm aware of punching Jax in the face.I'll grin a bit when he comments on the wine, slipping my shoes off to get comfortable, before I lean over to give Wrex a good scritching. "Oh, no, this isn't celebrating. This is a solemn Greek ceremony. I've got to dribble some of the wine out on the floor now to ensure the gods protect me here. Didn't I warn you about that?"Reaching out to Jax, I'll gingerly touch his chin, tilting his head up a little so I can get a good look at his nose. "Might as well hear the lie. You probably put a lot of work into it."

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 10:05:08 PM) "No, it wasn't Ray." He raised an eyebrow. "Wait, dribble?" He pointed over his shoulder at the kitchen. "Tile's over there."He lowered the towel and tilted his head back, wincing a little. His neck was still a little sore and slightly bruised from being lifted up by it. "It's not broken. And it was ninjas. Posthuman ninjas." He paused. "That's all I got. Posthuman ninjas. You think this is bad, you should see the mess I made of them." He smiled, then sighed. "Okay, it was Harper."

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 10:08:59 PM) I smirk a bit when he points at the tile. No, I'm not really going to pour the wine out. I don't know if he can really enjoy it tonight if he's got blood running out of his nose the whole time, though."Mm. Posthuman ninjas. Gotta watch out for them," I agree seriously, nodding as I humor him. Somehow, I'd thought Jax could come up with a better, sexier lie than that. The truth, on the other hand, makes me blink, shocked. "Why the hell did Harper punch you? And…did she hit you a lot? You're moving like you're sore." I wasn't aware she was that strong. Damn.

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 10:15:43 PM) "No," he said gloomily. "Just the once. This," he said, pointing at his neck. "Was someone else. Guy built like a truck had different ideas for the quiet surveillance op Harper and I were on. Threw the subject out a window and I'm pretty sure he was about to do the same to me until Harper shot him. In the knees. Because she decided tonight was a great night to go crazy."Okay, okay, maybe he had brought it up. He did kind of provoke her. But he had no idea she was so naive. He rolled his eyes away from Rook. "We talked about her issues with the fact that we occasionally, you know, kill people. Things got a little heated." He turned to him, smiling wryly. "Guess how it ended."

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 10:20:49 PM) "Hmmm. You guys cuddled and then you suggested picking out curtains together?" Yeah, no. So they fought over our methods and she punched him. I shake my head a little, dumbfounded."Am I going to have her angrily storming into my office to tell me we're all a bunch of murderers and she's quitting the team, then?"Because if she can't handle shooting to kill when it's absolutely called for, I imagine she must really have a low opinion of us.

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 10:26:11 PM) He scoffed at the cuddling comment. For so many reasons, no. "Probably not," he said hesitantly. "She'll probably expect that I'd tell you she already did."He winced a little. "She said she'll be putting in her papers tomorrow, I think. She'll probably be going straight to Croft." He prepared for the onslaught as he turned back toward Rook.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 10:29:37 PM) "Ah."I go quiet for a minute, thinking that over. She's a good addition to the team and I'd hate to see her go, but that's her decision. It's not as though I'd be the best person to try to talk her out of it anyway, after the whole thing with Jax.Leaning back against the arm of the couch, turned to face him, I regard Jax for a minute."I guess we'll deal with that bridge tomorrow, then."

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 10:39:29 PM) No onslaught. He felt almost disappointed. Almost, but not quite. He was just in a mood, a mood that had improved considerably since Rook had arrived. He nodded. "I just hope she doesn't change her mind. If she tells Croft she's quitting, that's it - she's done."He pulled the towel away from his nose again - the bleeding had slowed considerably. He gently dabbed at it. "So, hey. Key. Wine." He smiled.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 10:45:48 PM) "She's a big girl. She should be able to figure that out for herself," I point out. I don't want to see Harper gone, of course, but flipping out over it just isn't going to do me any good. If she truly feels that way, then that's that.I think she'll realize she can do a hell of a lot of good with us and decide against it if she stops and thinks, though."Key. Wine. And the bleeding appears to have stopped. I like that," I tell him with a grin before I get up, snagging the bottle to go open it and pour us a couple of glasses."So, aside from your fight with Posthuman ninjas, how've you been?"

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 10:53:15 PM) He grunted, giving Wrex a pat as the dog leaped off of the couch to check out what was going on in the kitchen. "Same old. Feel like I haven't see you in a while." He stood as well, padding to the sink. He wet another towel, using it to wipe the blood away from his nose gently."Saw the new guy at the gym yesterday. Wanted to spar - with that metal arm. Maybe you'd be up for it." He smiled, turning to lean against the counter. "I think he's going to pay Colin a visit, see if he can't fix it." He frowned, thinking. "Colin's been a little odd recently. More focused. I'd say it's Aria's influence, but it's… well, it's Aria.""How about you?" He crossed his arms.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 10:58:01 PM) "Ooh, I could be up for that kind of a challenge. Hopefully I wouldn't bend him or something. He could…bend it back, though, right?" After that I've seen him do, I'm fairly confident he could. Still, I'd feel kind of bad about it.When Jax mentions Colin's changes I pause, thinking for a moment. "Yeah? Maybe it's because of having his throat slit and his power going a little crazy. That'd make anybody take stock and reprioritize, I'd think."Or it's because of that meeting. Poor Colin."Well, Ray and I have both been trying to drum up further information on Laukos, to see if we can't be better prepared next time. Or maybe see if they might lead us information on the Ark. Unfortunately, my contact is being pretty uncooperative. So I think I'll just have to step up the pace and catch one myself."

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 11:05:27 PM) He nodded, growing serious again. "Yeah. When did you want to do that?" He gingerly rubbed at his neck, thinking about it. He was a little sore, but nothing a quick visit to Colin couldn't fix."Unless the world's put in imminent peril again, we could probably go tomorrow. I've got nothing scheduled, except sleeping in a bit. Breakfast. Maybe a nice, long massage. Being lifted by the throat kind of wreaks havoc on the shoulders." He smiled, an eyebrow raised hopefully as he made a big show of rolling his shoulders.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 11:09:12 PM) "Tomorrow sounds perfect." I'll hand him a glass of wine, then lean in to give him a careful kiss, now that the blood is cleaned up. I don't want to bump his nose, though. We can go tomorrow night, catch that female I've been watching, and be done with it. No more harassing Frankie needed. Since they aren't feral, we can find out what we need to first hand."After a lengthy, thorough massage, of course, which is completely deserved after your ninja fight." I smirk a little at him, taking a sip off of my wine.

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 11:16:55 PM) "Going to invite anyone else to the shindig, or will this be a private party?" Ray wouldn't be a good idea, obviously, and he had his doubts about exposing Anna to one of those things if it could be helped, but he could think of a few others who might be useful in the hunt. Colin might be an idea, just in case."Oh, well, if you insist," he said with a grin, taking a sip of wine. "So I cleared out a drawer in the dresser. Maybe you should bring some stuff over next time. You know, just in case."

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 11:21:01 PM) "I'd like to have backup, but with their sense of smell I'm worried more people will alert them to our presence and make it harder. Since they're in the city, I want this as quiet as possible." No sense in panicking anyone or starting a fight that could get someone hurt. Quiet and quick, then. "Colin would be good, should there be an injury."When Jax mentions the drawer, I grin a little, nodding, before I move back over to the couch. "Okay, I can do that. Definitely a change of clothes and a toothbrush could save me a lot of trouble around here."

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 11:26:49 PM) "Wait. In the city like in the city?" He followed, taking a deep drink of the wine. It was good stuff. "Literally in Manhattan?" He expected they'd be heading out to the wooded areas around the city, maybe even New Jersey for this.He sat down on the couch next to Rook, looking at him intently. "How are you planning on doing this? Hiding in an alley with a tranq gun?" There were people everywhere. They'd have to be very careful to get away with doing this in the city.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 11:32:28 PM) When he starts questioning me about it, I nod slightly, taking a deep breath, before letting it out slowly. "They run a bookstore, Jax. You'd never know to look at them." I know because every moment I haven't spent at work or with Jax has been spent staking that place out, learning what I can. Which, unfortunately, isn't much."They go out in pairs at night. Two of the females often go together and I think they'd be our best bet."If we could get one totally alone, it'd be perfect, but they rarely do that.

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 11:41:30 PM) He listened. Bookstore. Right. He knew that. "So these things pass as human. Means if we take one she's more than likely going to be missed. Once we have her, once we get the information we want, then what? We have to be careful about this. The police will be involved. Obviously we won't be able to take her back to the island, so what are we going to do with it?"Bringing her back to the island would be risky for a few different reasons, not the least of which being the potential for this extra-curricular activity being linked back to the group.

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/1/2009 11:51:42 PM) "They might look human, but they aren't," I remind Jax with a sigh. "But you bring up valid points. I've been thinking of them as animals, and they may not react like that. They might react in a perfectly reasonable human manner. In which case releasing or disposing of it could cause problems."I see no issue in simply shooting them in their heads, but maybe I am a little too quick to jump to killing. Harper might just have a point there."Do you have any alternate ideas?"

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/1/2009 11:59:41 PM) "We don't even know what would happen if we kill it. For all we know it'll turn back to… whatever. And then we're left with a much bigger body that'll really cause a stir if it's found. So we bring masks. We don't do anything to tie the Initiative or Kerberos to us. We capture it, tranq it, throw it in a van, take it outside the city and get our answers, and we go. No mess, no fuss, no nothing, and no way to track it back to us if we do it right."He cocked his head. "Do we even know for sure these particular Laukos are a threat? They run a bookstore."

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/2/2009 12:14:13 AM) "I like that plan." Simple, quick. It works with what I'd been hoping for. "We should bring Ray, in case the tranqs aren't enough." A few zaps should keep her under control, if the tranqs don't do the trick, after all. When Jax suggests these ones aren't a threat, I give him a rather surprised look. "And terrorists can run laundromats. That proves nothing. I haven't seen any of them hurt anybody, but…they might just hide it very well."

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/2/2009 12:20:19 AM) He frowned. Ray? He saw the logic in that plan, Ray could do a lot to keep a person down. He just didn't feel right exposing Ray to one of those things when it wasn't absolutely necessary. He was the boss now, though."Laundromats are inherently dangerous, though," he said with a small smile. "Hell, if you weren't a terrorist before, spending a few years surrounded by strangers dirty unmentionables would drive anybody to it." He let his smile fade. "I get it, though. Hell, why don't we just ask it tomorrow?"

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/2/2009 12:24:57 AM) ((*scratch one of those "Hells."))

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/2/2009 12:27:44 AM) I notice that frown from Jax, and he gets one in return. "He's got to face them again. Better it be only one, under relatively controlled circumstances, then another army of the things," I point out carefully. Yes, I did consider Ray's past history with them. A single female who will be shot with a hell of a lot of tranquilizers won't be that bad, and it might help him better deal with it later on."And if he said he didn't want to, I wouldn't force the issue. It'll be a request, not an order."The comment about laundromats is met with a faint smirk. "Yeah, we might as well try to find out what its pack is up to."

Jax Tempest (Drew) (8/2/2009 12:35:29 AM) He conceded the point with a short nod. "You're right. You're annoying like that." He looked away. "I'll give him a call in the morning, give him a few hours to get used to the idea."He leaned back, his shoulder against Rook's. He reached out for the remote control, flipping the television back on as he took another sip of his wine. He raised the glass towards Rook. "Thanks."

Marquis Rook Hale (Parthenogenic) (8/2/2009 12:41:38 AM) I nod at that, accepting it, then give Jax a little toast with my wine glass. "And thank you for the key."Can't say I ever got to the key exchange point with anybody. Then again, dating was a bit…confusing before. It's not so much with Jax, even if this was all unexpected.I'll settle in beside him to drink and watch the TV, slipping an arm loosely around his shoulders.
